MYTH OR MAGIC? – HONEY LIME WATER AND APPLE CIDER VINEGAR PROMOTE WEIGHT LOSS

We have all heard or read about how honey-lime water and apple cider vinegar miraculously help to burn fat when consumed early in the morning. Your overweight Chachi or your fitness freak cousin, your chatterbox neighbour, and even your maid have all given you this fabulous weight loss tip and sworn by its magical properties. As much as we hate to break that rosy bubble of yours, there are no shortcuts to weight loss, and certainly no magic potions.

While, pure unadulterated honey does have some medicinal properties, honey is rich in fructose (a type of sugar) and various researches claim benefits as well as detrimental properties of regular honey consumption, especially in relation to sugar control in people with diabetes, triglyceride and cholesterol levels. Hence, it is recommended that honey should not be taken on a regular basis without supervision.

Lemon on the other hand can cause acidity and heart burn. Extensive use can corrode the tooth enamel, making teeth sensitive to hot and cold foods. If you are adding lemon juice to water for your daily dose of Vitamin C, you can also try – guava, citrus fruits and amla (Indian gooseberry)! What we are trying to say here is, you may experiment with the drink yourself and conclude whether it works for you or not (your body will tell you), but in either scenario, it surely isn’t a shortcut to losing weight. Nonetheless, lemon juice as well as honey when used to flavour foods in moderate amounts can work wonders for the palate.

Similarly, apple cider can cause burning sensation in the throat and acid burns your stomach lining if consumed for very long periods of time. Prolonged use has also been reported to cause low levels of potassium in the body and bladder cancer. Extensive contact of the acid with your teeth can also cause erosion of the tooth enamel, making your teeth sensitive to hot and cold foods. To consume these drinks on an empty stomach early in the morning makes them all the more hazardous. Try this instead, have one-two glasses of plain warm water first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach. It is the best way to cleanse your colon by flushing out toxins. Furthermore, it aids bowel movement and you can bid farewell to constipation. Additionally, water promotes hydration of the skin and body cells promoting glowing skin and lustrous hair! What’s a better time than morning to start the hydration process for the day!

Bear this in mind – food should cater to two main purposes: NUTRITION and TASTE. Gulping down cider or honey lime water without liking the taste has no meaning. These drinks are not nutritionally exceptional either.

And why do you want a shortcut anyway? What do you do when your best friend comes over after, say, 2 years? Do you give her a glass of honey lime water or do you make yummy parathas dipped in ghee? Get our point? When you know how to shower love on others, why not shower some on yourself too?

When it comes to weight loss, nothing can help you better than healthy homemade meals. So, have a fruit first thing in the morning, followed by your favorite hot, nutritious breakfast that is shown to kick-start your metabolism (leading to a healthier way of weight loss) – idli-sambhar, eggs & toast, waffles, poha, upma, parathas or any other foods you have always eaten for breakfast – take your pick!
